British Fatalities in the Irish War of Independence
When the Irish War of Independence began, Great Britain had just emerged from World War I and had plenty of soldiers experienced in traditional combat. They were much less prepared for the guerilla war they encountered in Ireland. The Republicans, also with many veterans, were far fewer and could seldom engage in pitched battle. Consequently, most combat deaths were from ambush or attempts to raid Republican strongholds or hideouts. There were many accidental deaths and a surprising number of suicides.
