Fatalities Among Republicans in the 1916 Easter Rising
The Irish Rising in 1916 was designed to be a nation-wide revolt against Great Britain's rule. Tragically, it failed in that regard and became essentially a local rising in Dublin, with only a few small, isolated events elsewhere. Poor communication, far too few combatants, and scarce arms and supplies doomed it to failure. Many of the participants were imprisoned, usually under difficult circumstances, leading to their death. The leaders of the rising were executed, stripping the Republicans of many, some would say almost all leaders, of national statue.
