Civilian Fatalities in the Easter 1916 Rising
There were more civilians killed in the Easter Rising than there were deaths on either the Republican or British side. Many were killed by stray bullets or were mistaken for combatants. The latter was especially a problem for the British because many of the Republicans did not have uniforms. Civilians were told to stay off the streets but some chose to ignore the warning.
