Fatalities Among Anti-Treaty RepublicansThe treaty ending the War of Irish Independence created the Irish Free State which was free from active British control but contained provisions objected to by many in Ireland. The most onerous created Northern Ireland composed of the six northern, primarily protestant, counties, as a separate entity still part of Great Britain. The Free State had to swear allegiance to the British Crown and did not create the Republic of Ireland for which so many fought. As a result a deep schism was created in which one part of the IRA succeeded from from the organization and formed the Anti-Treaty IRA with the intent to continue the conflict until all the goals of the War were achieved. The anti-treaty faction was numerically superior and generally were well versed in guerilla warfare. The suffered from a paucity of arms and supplies and had minimal ways of obtaining such.
